The countdown to British Science Week 2025 has begun, and we’re thrilled to announce that this year’s theme is ‘Change and Adapt’ – a concept that resonates deeply with the ever-evolving world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). From the way we live our lives to the natural world around us, change and adaptation are at the heart of progress and survival. And this year, we're bringing this theme to life with our school workshops at the Science of Sound.

We’re excited to offer a range of assemblies and workshops throughout February, March, and April 2025, designed to inspire curiosity and spark a love for STEM in students of all ages. With limited availability, now is the time for schools to get in touch and secure their spot!

What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, but it’s so much more than just an acronym. It’s a way of thinking, learning, and problem-solving that shapes the world around us. STEM is the driving force behind innovation, from the smartphones in our pockets to the renewable energy technologies that power our homes. It’s about understanding how things work, asking questions, and finding creative solutions to challenges.

  • Science is the study of the natural world, from the tiniest particles to the vastness of space. It’s about observing, experimenting, and discovering how everything around us functions.

  • Technology involves using scientific knowledge to create tools, systems, and devices that make our lives easier and more efficient. Think of everything from the internet to medical imaging machines.

  • Engineering is the application of science and math to design, build, and improve structures, machines, and systems. Engineers are the problem-solvers who turn ideas into reality.

  • Mathematics is the language of STEM. It’s the foundation for understanding patterns, solving problems, and making sense of data.

Together, these fields are interconnected, driving progress and innovation in every aspect of our lives. STEM isn’t just about equations or lab experiments – it’s about curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. It’s about understanding the world and using that knowledge to make it better.

STEM also plays a critical role in addressing global challenges, such as climate change, healthcare, and food security. By encouraging students to explore STEM, we’re equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to tackle these issues and shape the future.

During British Science Week 2025, we’re celebrating the power of STEM and its ability to inspire change and adaptation. By engaging students in hands-on activities and thought-provoking discussions, we hope to show them that STEM is not only fascinating but also accessible to everyone. After all, the next great discovery could come from anyone – maybe even one of your students!

Why ‘Change and Adapt’?

The theme of ‘Change and Adapt’ is a fascinating lens through which to explore the world of STEM. Change and adaptation are fundamental to life on Earth and beyond. They shape the way we live, the technology we use, and even the future of our planet. Here are just a few examples of how this theme manifests in the world around us:

  • Technology: Think about how far we’ve come in just a few decades. Rotary phones have evolved into smartphones that fit in our pockets, connecting us to the world in seconds. The way we communicate, work, and entertain ourselves has changed dramatically, and technology continues to adapt to our needs.

  • Nature: The natural world is full of incredible examples of adaptation. Animals and plants evolve to survive in their environments, whether through camouflage, changes in behavior, or the development of new traits. From chameleons blending into their surroundings to deep-sea creatures thriving in extreme conditions, adaptation is key to survival.

  • Climate Action: As the world faces the challenges of climate change, we’re being forced to change how we consume resources and adapt our lifestyles to reduce waste and protect the planet. Recycling, renewable energy, and sustainable practices are all examples of how we’re adapting to create a better future.

  • Space: Even beyond our planet, change and adaptation are at work. Stars and planets evolve over time, and scientists are constantly discovering new celestial phenomena. Who knows? Perhaps there’s life on other planets that has adapted to its unique environment in ways we can’t yet imagine.

This theme also encourages us to reflect on how attitudes toward STEM have changed over time. The image of a ‘stereotypical scientist’ is fading, and we’re embracing the idea that anyone can be a scientist. Diversity and inclusion in STEM are more important than ever, and we’re here to celebrate that.

Our Assemblies and Workshops

To bring the ‘Change and Adapt’ theme to life, we’ve curated a range of exciting workshops and assemblies that explore the science of sound and beyond. These sessions are designed to be engaging, interactive, and educational, encouraging students to think critically, ask questions, and explore new ideas. Here’s a sneak peek at what we’re offering:

  • Sound Technology Special: This workshop takes students on a journey through the evolution of sound technology. From vinyl records to streaming services, students will learn how innovation has shaped the way we listen to music and communicate. They’ll also get hands-on with sound equipment, experimenting with how sound is created, transmitted, and heard.

  • The Science of Hearing: How do our ears adapt to different sounds and environments? This workshop delves into the biology of hearing, exploring how our ears process sound and how technology like hearing aids has evolved to improve lives. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the human body and the incredible ways it adapts to its surroundings.

  • Camouflage and Sound: Did you know some animals use sound to hide from predators? This workshop combines biology and physics to explore how creatures adapt to their environments using sound. Students will learn about the fascinating ways animals use sound for survival and even try out some sound-based camouflage techniques themselves.

  • General STEM Workshops: From climate change to space exploration, our general workshops cover a wide range of topics that highlight the importance of change and adaptation in STEM. These sessions are perfect for schools looking to explore the theme in a broader context.

Why Book with Us?

Our assemblies and workshops are designed to be more than just educational – they’re an experience. We bring the wonders of STEM to life, creating memorable moments that inspire students to think differently about the world around them. Whether it’s through hands-on experiments, interactive demonstrations, or thought-provoking discussions, our sessions are tailored to engage students of all ages and abilities.

But don’t wait too long – availability is limited!
